A regional water utility faced the problem of not having sufficient information about the operating status of its water wells. They were looking for a monitoring solution that could be installed in existing wells and provide additional information to help reduce operating costs.
A modern, wireless data collection system that enables online monitoring of drinking water wells and pump stations, real-time status monitoring, and collection of operating data even in hard-to-reach areas. The system provides significant assistance in optimizing operating costs, reducing energy consumption and increasing operational reliability.
Object:
The regional water utility’s objective was to implement a state-of-the-art monitoring system that provides an accurate picture of the operation of water wells, helps optimize energy consumption, and reduces operating and maintenance costs.
The challenge
- There was insufficient data available on the operating status of the existing drinking water wells.
- A monitoring solution was needed that could be retrofitted without major dismantling or conversion.
- The measurement data had to be transmitted reliably over a large area, even in places where traditional data communication did not work properly.
Our solution
The WaterScope IoT well house monitoring system was installed in 2021 on existing wells built in 2012.
The main components of the system are:
- WS IoT SGU general data collection unit
- Water pressure gauge
- Well water level gauge
- Current and voltage meter
- SQM Smart water meter
- Intrusion detector
- NBIoT or LoRaWAN communication
The system provides the following functions:
Monitoring of pump operating time and power consumption
Measurement of electrical power and water pressure
Water level monitoring
Recording of machine room door status (open/closed)
Flood monitoring
Alarm notification in case of threshold violation or unusual operation
The data is stored in the cloud and can be accessed securely and with authorization via a web interface or mobile device.
The results
- Real-time analysis of the collected data allows for the optimization of operational processes.
- Water extraction can be better coordinated, even for remote wells.
- Operating and maintenance costs have been significantly reduced.
- Energy efficiency and operational reliability have been improved.
- Proactive system alerts enable rapid fault detection and intervention.
