Use of the WaterScope IoT system to optimize irrigation
An agricultural company with more than 10 linear irrigation systems wanted to improve water use efficiency and increase crop yields.
Goal: Accurate monitoring of irrigation
The goal of implementing the WaterScope IoT system was to enable real-time monitoring of water consumption so that company managers could make informed irrigation decisions.
The challenge
- The existing irrigation machines did not have any measurement devices.
- There was no way to accurately account for and monitor water usage.
- No adequate documentation was available for contracted irrigation services.
- Troubleshooting (e.g., machine breakdowns or jams) was delayed due to a lack of information.
Our solution
- Water consumption measurement: monitoring water volume with litre accuracy.
- Pressure measurement: to check the operation and efficiency of the system.
- Fuel level measurement: for diesel-powered irrigation machines to prevent breakdowns.
- GPS positioning: for automatic identification of irrigated areas.
- Data transfer: NB-IoT communication: stable, energy-efficient, hourly data transmission to the cloud.
- Data display on a web interface and mobile app, on a graphical map.
The results
- Continuous data collection on all machines.
- Fuel monitoring has reduced downtime due to breakdowns.
- Irrigated plots can be viewed on a map and historical data is also available.
- Documentation of contract irrigation has become simpler and more transparent.
- The system immediately signals errors (e.g. if a machine is not irrigating or not moving).
- The company has become more competitive in the market.
